December is a special time not only in Poland , Romania, Bulgaria but also in the Netherlands. Although many of us wait for Christmas, in the Netherlands one of the most important days of December is Saint Nicholas Day, known as Sinterklaas. This joyful celebration is full of gifts, traditions, and unique customs.

If you live or work in the Netherlands – for example through SBA Flex – it’s worth discovering this beautiful Dutch tradition.

Who is Sinterklaas?
Sinterklaas is the Dutch equivalent of Saint Nicholas. According to tradition, he arrives every year on November 15 on the island of Texel. A steamboat carrying Sinterklaas and his helpers reaches the port of Oudeschild at noon, and the arrival is broadcast live on television and celebrated across many cities. His helper is Zwarte Piet – Black Peter.

Sinterklaas differs from the Santa Claus we know. He wears a bishop’s robe, a mitre, and carries a crosier. His image is rooted in the historical figure of Saint Nicholas.

How Is Saint Nicholas Day Celebrated in the Netherlands?
The most important day of the celebration is December 5, called Pakjesavond – the Evening of Gifts. Families gather to spend time together, exchange presents, and enjoy seasonal sweets.

Children often leave their shoes by the fireplace or door, and the next morning they find small gifts and traditional treats inside, such as:
• pepernoten – small spiced cookies,
• chocoladeletters – chocolate letters shaped after the first letter of the name,
• speculaas – crunchy, aromatic spiced cookies.

Sinterklaas Among Poles Living and Working in the Netherlands
For many Poles working in the Netherlands, Sinterklaas is a great opportunity to learn about local culture and traditions. Many companies, including those cooperating with SBA Flex, organize holiday meetings, gifts for employees and children, as well as parades and Christmas markets in Dutch cities.

It’s the perfect moment to feel the magic of the holidays, integrate with the local community, and discover new customs.

Interesting Facts About Sinterklaas

• Children write letters to him, just like in other countries.
• Instead of reindeer, he rides a horse named Ozosnel, which walks across rooftops.
• The Sinterklaas tradition is older than the American Santa Claus.
